I went to Darwin Writers’ Festival in 2014 to sit on a couple of (humid) panels with Jen Jewel Brown, Bernard Zuel, Mark Mordue and Mark Smith (of Music NT). I also did a three-hour workshop for a group on music writing – that ultimately developed into my Guardian masterclass. We talked about music criticism on Rock Words, which was recorded by the festival (below). Being a three-day event in Darwin, the writers who attended (included John van Tiggelen, Omar Musa, Clare Scobie and Christos Tsiolkas) really bonded over amazing sunsets and swims in the hotel pool.
